Tips for a better job search in Jobportal

Write a good profile text as a basis for your job search!  A profile text is a short elevator speech at the beginning of a job application or resume. A good profile text is around 250 words. The purpose of a profile text is to get the reader interested in reading further and to summarize who you are, where you’ve been, what you can do and where you’re going next.

Good profile text consists of:

  • 200–400 words, 3 to 4 sentences
  • Your title or job description
  • Opening
  • Soft and hard skills
  • Impressive achievements and numbers
  • Short/long term goals
  • A professional example that demonstrates your suitability for the job you are applying for

The author of the job advertisement has chosen to use certain words. Try to phrase your profile text in a way that is naturally similar to the job advertisement. If you have not yet accumulated years of experience in the sector, you can use the following words in your profile text career goals and transferable skills. Combining skills with numbers makes them even more impressive. See examples below!

Example: Experienced digital marketing manager with six years of senior management experience in a multinational company. Increased inbound leads by 300% and grew online sales from €300,000 a year to over €2.5 million in three years. I want to progress in my career and that’s why I offer my skills to the X marketing team.

Short and to the point, with a focus on achievements.

Example: Expert SEO copywriter with a decade of retail and wholesale experience in three industries. Adept at writing social media and website content, as well as long-form content that emphasizes a brand’s own tone and message. Gained 20 new clients in two years and grew readership by 200%. I now want to deepen my expertise as an editor and content producer in the role of Marketing Director.

Example: A content producer with three years’ experience in a company specializing in e-commerce. Produced content that increased the brand’s social media visibility to over 100,000 across three channels and improved email open rates by 58%. I want to progress in my career and am therefore applying for a position as V’s SEO Manager.

Example: I’m a content producer looking for a job as an SEO specialist. I have no experience in this field, but I am dedicated to my work and am a quick learner. My interest in search engines will help me to perform my duties excellently in your company.

The text does not grab the reader’s attention or introduce transferable skills.

Example: I have worked for five years as a digital marketing coordinator. I proved to be an important and hard-working member of the team, able to work under pressure to achieve the company’s goals. I am looking for new challenges in digital marketing.

Generic, not about achievements. Too passive in tone.

Portfolio assures the employer

A portfolio is often a requirement for coders and developers, as well as writers, artists, designers, photographers, web designers, illustrators and other creative professionals. For these sectors, a portfolio is an important part of the application process. You can build your portfolio on a platform of your choice. There are many platforms where you can create a portfolio; www. pages, LinkedIn, Instagram, Sway, YouTube/Vimeo.

A portfolio as a supplement to a job application convinces the employer of your skills, communicates your personality and style. Depending on the sector, a portfolio may be implemented differently, for example, an IT professional and a musician’s portfolio will certainly look different. So take a look at sector-specific portfolios. If you can’t figure out how to showcase your skills, you can find lots of examples of portfolios on Google. You can also use search terms like ‘portfolio examples *field*’ when you need inspiration for your portfolio.

A few good practices to keep in mind when creating a portfolio:

  • User-friendly navigation
Don’t make it difficult to navigate or understand your portfolio. You want the reader to find what they are looking for quickly and painlessly. The easier it is to navigate, the better. Also think about what the reader wants to see. Make it easy to find your best stories. Think about organizing your content so that visitors can sort by project type or other relevant criteria.
  • Include detailed descriptions
The description can include a personal account of the primary challenge or objective of the project, your role, the key techniques or processes used and any positive outcomes or things you have learned.
  • Start strong
It goes without saying that your portfolio should include your best work. To help you make your selection, let the job description serve as your guide. Pay attention to the type of employee the employer is specifically looking for and the adjectives they use to describe them. Get to know the company and get a feel for its culture and values. Once you have this information, it will be easier to match the best examples in your portfolio with what the employer is looking for. And of course, your samples should highlight your key strengths, as well as your breadth, industry expertise, style and technical skills. You don’t want your best work to be lost in a sea of good examples. First impressions and last impressions are proven to have long-lasting effects, so start with the best and estonian your portfolio with the second best.
  • Think mobile optimization
Today, most website traffic comes from mobile devices. This means that if your portfolio isn’t optimized for mobile users, you won’t make a big impact on the majority of people who see it. Your content may appear cropped, too big, too small or have other design issues. It’s worth making sure that the platform you choose works for mobile users.

A good resume is clear, informative and readable. It contains the most relevant information for the job, such as work experience, system skills, the right educational background or any other relevant requirements for the job. The resume should be no more than 2 pages long. The most important information should be visible in seconds to the recruiter.
Use simple language in your resume. It is therefore a good idea to break a long sentence into two easy-to-read and understand sentences. You can stand out from the crowd by using different formatting, such as Bold and Italic. From Canva you’ll find plenty of visual resume templates if you want to stand out visually with colours and layouts. But remember to keep your resume clear and readable! Some formats also break down when you save the resume as a PDF (the resume must always be sent as a PDF unless otherwise stated. Please check this before sending your resume. If the job advertisement is in English, then the resume must also be in English. If the job advertisement is in Estonian, then resume in both Estonian and English is often acceptable, unless otherwise stated cv-pohja.com.

What are the most important things on a resume?

Relevant to the post applied for; you have the necessary qualifications for the post, your work/study experience is relevant to the post and the sector you are applying for. Basic information such as spelling, language and contact details. Your references and their contact details or a reference to them (“Contact details of referees will be provided on request.”). Briefly summarize your work experience in a few bullet points; I worked, coordinated, raised sales…, was responsible for…, developed, designed, etc. and good profile text. See tips for good profile text above.

Is it worth adding a list of your strengths in the job to your resume?

Definitely worth it. Add the strengths that are most relevant to the job or the employer’s needs. This also shows the recruiter that you understand what is required for the job.

Student or recent graduate resume

Students often have accumulated transferable skills or experience. For example, many students have some form of customer service work alongside their studies. This experience is very useful in many jobs. Highlight the qualities that you think the job requires and that you have.

Things you can find useful skills for a job application: playing a sport, volunteering, tutoring, student exchange/studying abroad, theatre or music, service work, student council, internships or a personal passion.

➔ Thinking about who you are and how you act in a role helps you to see who you might be as an employee.

Qualities, which are needed in working life and which you can have without work experience: initiative, critical thinking, organizational skills, expertise in the field x, leadership, customer focus, good communication skills, adaptability, creative eye and stress tolerance.

An established resume

You no longer need to mention your first summer job. Give enough information about the duties, duration and content of previous jobs. Also remember to mention if you are still employed. Almost all of us have gaps in our work history for one reason or another. Consider whether you want to open up the reasons for the gaps, for example maternity leave, parental leave or unpaid leave.
